Section 1: Overview & Purpose Overview & Purpose Welcome to Jumpstart’s Service-Learning Resource Guide! This resource guide is designed to support Jumpstart staff and faculty advisors as they plan and implement Jumpstart service-learning programs. Offering best practices from both the Jumpstart network and from national experts in the field of service-learning, this guide will help you plan, design, and refine your course. Whether you are a new to service-learning or a veteran practitioner, we hope that the resource guide will be a useful tool in your attempt to fully integrate Jumpstart service with academic studies. Please consider it to be a resource that you read, consult, annotate, question and add to as you deepen your experience with and knowledge of service-learning. We urge you to share your feedback about this guide with us. This chapter overview provides information on the structure and use of the Service-Learning Resource Guide as well as the other support you will receive from Jumpstart national and regional staff in implementing a service-learning program at your site. Contents of the Service-Learning Resource Guide The Service-Learning Resource Guide consists of two chapters: Getting Started and Integrating Service-Learning. Please note that the Getting Started chapter has been written for site managers and other Jumpstart staff interested in bringing a Jumpstart service-learning course to campus. The Integrating Service-Learning chapter has been written with course designers in mind and thus contains the nuts and bolts of revising a syllabus, integrating reflection techniques, and the process for course refinement and enhancement. HTML Format The Service-Learning Resource Guide is in HTML format in order to make it as accessible and easy-to-use as possible. This format allows you to search for specific documents using keywords, to navigate content quickly using the sidebar of the guide, and to create printer-friendly versions of all materials using the “Printer Friendly” button located on the every page. Guidelines Each guideline provides more detailed instructions for a specific project or task in the development and implementation of a Jumpstart service-learning course. Here you find the “how, what, where, and when” for specific tasks or aspects of high-quality service-learning (e.g., expectations for structuring reflection activities that occur throughout the duration of the course). Tools The tools within each chapter provide specific examples of how to apply the principles or steps outlined in the guidelines.
