Section II: Overview & Purpose Section II: Overview & Purpose Welcome to Section II of Jumpstart’s Service-Learning Resource Guide. We believe you will find the information, worksheets, reflection prompts, and tools provided in this Section helpful as you begin to integrate service-learning into your Jumpstart course and as you continue the process of improving your implementation of the pedagogy. As an organization, Jumpstart is committed to providing children with high-quality one-to-one support in language, literacy, social and initiative skills. Jumpstart is similarly committed to providing adult learners with the knowledge and skills to impact the young children that they serve as Corps members and to continue acting as engaged citizens beyond their year of service. Faculty members and site managers from the Jumpstart network first demonstrated that the Jumpstart service could be successfully linked with academic coursework in 2000-2001. Based on these demonstrated results and the burgeoning interest in the field, Jumpstart began putting into place resource materials, training, and technical assistance to offer sites within its network guidance about service-learning and the process of high-quality course design and implementation. In surveying the network regarding the types of supports needed, many members highlighted the need for a “how-to” guide to use a reference when developing a service-learning program or course at their institution. Jumpstart turned to experienced practitioner-scholars Patti Clayton and Myra Moses; Section II: Integrating Service-Learning of the Jumpstart Service-Learning Resource Guide is a result of this collaboration. It is our intention and our hope that as a user of this Guide you will contribute to its ongoing development. Let us know what you find most and least useful in this material; share with us examples of assignments and activities you develop with the support of this Guide, for potential inclusion in a later edition; help us learn from your experience and join us in disseminating that learning with the rest of the service-learning community.
