Chapter 1: Overview of Service-Learning

Jumpstart’s approach to accomplishing the goal of preparing children to enter school ready to succeed depends on the work of undergraduates at colleges and universities around the country; in turn, the success of these students depends on how effectively instructors at these institutions integrate Jumpstart service-learning into their courses.

Jumpstart instructors, like many faculty around the country, may find it challenging to teach with service-learning. Chapter 1 of this Resource Guide is designed to provide you as an instructor with a solid conceptual overview of service-learning. Topics in this chapter include:

• Defining Service-Learning – provides widely used definitions of service-learning that have been constructed by leading experts in the field



• Benefits and Challenges of Service-Learning – explores the benefits and challenges associated with teaching and learning with service-learning, as well as a brief discussion of the importance of thinking through the challenges
